In the north, in the valley of the Nile, a fertile strip of land along the river is home to a dense population of farmers. In this area, some powerful chiefdoms are emerging which will, over the next few centuries, coalesce to form the kingdom of Egypt.
Farming peoples are spreading gradually along the north African coast and down the Nile valley into Nubia. Here, in what is now the Sudan, semi-nomadic peoples herd cattle, whilst throughout the rest of the continent, small bands of hunter-gatherers roam the countryside, living in small encampments as they follow their prey and forage for nuts, berries and other nutritious plants. There are some settlements of fishermen beside rivers and lakes.
