In 3500 BC, much of the ancient world is inhabited by small groups of hunter-gatherers. Since about 9000 BC, however, farming has been spreading in and around the Middle East, southern and eastern Asia, Europe and northern Africa, as well parts of Central and South America. The growing of crops and the domestication of animals has advanced at a similar pace. The spread of agriculture has enabled populations to expand and villages of farmers now dot the landscapes of these regions.
In the Middle East, the first civilizations are appearing, in the river valleys of ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt.
