The Yellow River culture has continued to develop. Farming is now the backbone of the economy, and it is evident that the people are now exploiting the fertile soil of the Yellow River valley to its full potential. There is still evidence for hunting and fishing, however. The towns and villages have grown in size and number, and the larger ones are surrounded by earth walls. Pottery shards from this period carry inscriptions which include composite ideographs, conveying simple meanings. These show that the Chinese system of writing is gradually developing.
