In South East Asia by 3500 BC, small farming communities covered the peninsulas and islands of the region – in fact, it is here that some of the earliest remains of agriculture have been found, dating back to about 7000 BC. Even so, many hunter-gatherer groups still inhabit the inland forest and mountains areas.
Australia is inhabited by aborigines who have a way of life much as it is today – small family groups living in temporary shelters, exploiting their deep knowledge of the inhospitable environment to hunt and forage effectively.
The islands of the Pacific ocean are as yet uninhabited by humans.
